Season two of the critically acclaimed, dystopian original drama series Cleverman will premiere in New Zealand on TVNZ Ondemand on Friday June 30 and Duke on Monday July 3 (Freeview channel 13).

Set in the future, Cleverman features powerful characters from ancient Aboriginal mythology, the Hairypeople, who must battle daily to survive in a world that seeks to silence and destroy them.

Following the international success of the first season, which earned a prestigious Peabody Award nomination, the six-episode second season two picks up with the destruction of the Zone and the Hairypeople hiding out of fear for their lives.

Koen (Hunter Page-Lochard), the chosen Cleverman, sets out to harness his powers in the hope of bringing all cultures together.  His half-brother Waruu (Rob Collins) shares the same vision, but his method is far more dubious.  For Koen to realise his mission, he must defeat Waruu and the full force of the Government, both which are united against him.  With twisting plotlines and new characters including Jarli the Bindawu warrior (Clarence Ryan), and based on an original concept by Ryan Griffen, Cleverman season two is action packed, bloody and thought-provoking.

Cleverman boasts an outstanding ensemble cast that includes award-winning actor Iain Glenn (Game of Thrones), Golden Globe nominee Frances O’Connor (The Missing), Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), Hunter Page-Lochard (The Sapphires), Rob Collins (The Wrong Girl), Clarence Ryan (Lockie Leonard) and Rachael Blake (Rake).  Creatures, design and effects are by the world-renowned Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, Avatar).  Wayne Blair and Leah Purcell return as the series’ directors.

Two episodes of the first season recently premiered at the highly prestigious Sydney Film Festival, season one has been named Best Drama Series of the Year (2016 – Screen Producers Awards) and has also been nominated for a number of global and domestic industry Awards.

“It is absolute honour to have three great New Zealand companies, Pukeko Pictures, Weta Workshop and Park Road Post Production working together, along with Goalpost Pictures on a truly global production.  Cleverman season one was a resounding success in all broadcast markets and we look forward to seeing the same with the second installment of this critically acclaimed, dystopian original drama series.  We are thrilled TVNZ has come on board again to follow up on season one’s story with the second chapter, and showcase the brilliance of a New Zealand/Australian co-production to our local audience,” said Co-Owner of Pukeko Pictures and Weta Workshop, Richard Taylor.

The series is produced by Goalpost Pictures Australia and New Zealand’s Pukeko Pictures for ABC Australia in co-production with SundanceTV and Red Arrow international, with the assistance of Screen Australia, Screen NSW and the New Zealand Screen Production Grant and in association with Head Gear Films & Metrol Technology.  Red Arrow International distributes Cleverman worldwide.
